Services sector in Paraíba grows 4.8% in 2024 and registers 2nd largest growth in the Northeast, reveals IBGE

The volume of the services sector in Paraíba showed the second highest growth in the Northeast Region in 2024, according to data from the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS), which were released this Wednesday (12) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In the accumulated period from January to December of last year, Paraíba registered an increase of 4.8% over the year 2023, reaching the second highest rate among the nine states of the Northeast and above the national average (3.1%). It is the fourth consecutive year of expansion in the sector in the State of Paraíba.
In the 12 months of last year, 11 rates were positive, with emphasis on the months of July (13%) and November (10.4%) with percentages above double digits of growth.
PERFORMANCE OF STATES – In Brazil, 22 of the 26 federative units and the Federal District showed growth last year in the services sector. The highest growth rates in the services sector in 2024 were Amazonas (10.2%), Amapá (7.7%), Sergipe (7.1%), Espírito Santo (6.2%), Santa Catarina (6.1%), the Federal District (5.1%) and Paraíba (4.8%). The biggest drops were in Mato Grosso (-10.2%); Rio Grande do Sul (-7.3%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-6.5%).
ACTIVITIES THAT PROGRESSED THE MOST – In the 2024 annual result, four of the five sectors had a positive performance. The biggest highlights were information and communication services and professional, administrative and complementary services; services provided to families increased and other services advanced compared to the previous year. The only sector with a negative result was transportation, with a drop of -0.7%.
WHAT THE SURVEY MEASURES – The Monthly Service Survey (PMS) produces indicators that allow monitoring the current performance of the country's and states' services sector, investigating gross revenue from services in formally constituted companies with 20 or more employees, whose main activity is a non-financial service, but excluding the areas of health and education. Along with public administration, the services and trade sectors have the largest weights in the composition of the country's and states' GDP.
